STEPS INVOLVED IN THE INVESTMENT CASTING PROCESS
Create a "pattern" (ie replica) of the part to be cast by injecting wax into the mold. This process is also used for die casting.
Compile several potential wax models into a complete assembly called a gate control system or "tree". This form allows molten metal to flow into the cavity at a later stage.
The components are immersed in the advanced ceramic slurry (called the investment stage).
With the components still wet, add a layer of coarse ceramic particles with a thickness of 10mm.
Melt the wax in the dry mold, leaving a thin-walled and hollow ceramic shell.
The mold is fired to remove the final wax marks and increase the durability of the final mold. This may require a temperature of 1000°C.
Pour the molten metal into the mold that is still heated. The use of heated molds can improve dimensional accuracy, allowing tolerances as low as .076mm.
Break or cut the cooled shell mold to expose the casting.
Finishing the final part using dressing, grinding, sandblasting, heat treatment and other testing or surface finishing processes
