The forging process of flange can be divided into hot forging and cold forging. The differences are as follows:
In the hot forging of flanges, large flanges with complex shapes can be forged due to the small deformation energy and low deformation resistance. In order to obtain flanges with high dimensional accuracy, hot forging can be used in the temperature range of 900-1000°C. The purpose of hot forging flanges is mainly to reduce the deformation resistance of metals, thereby reducing the forging pressure required for the deformation of crushed materials, and greatly reducing the tonnage of forging equipment. Change the as-cast structure of the steel ingot used for the flange. After recrystallization in the hot forging process, the coarse as-cast structure becomes a new structure with fine grains, which reduces the defects of the as-cast structure and improves the mechanical properties of the steel.
When the flange is cold forged at low temperature, the size of the flange changes little. When forging below 700℃, the oxide scale will be reduced and the surface will not be decarburized. Therefore, as long as the deformation can be within the forming energy range, cold forging can easily obtain good dimensional accuracy and surface finish. As long as the temperature and lubrication cooling are well controlled, the warm forging below 700°C will also obtain good accuracy. Cold forging is a forming process at the material's recrystallization temperature and a forging process at the recovery temperature. In production, forging without heating the blank is called cold forging. Cold forging materials are mainly aluminum and certain alloys, copper and certain alloys, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel and low-alloy structural steel, with low deformation resistance and good plasticity at room temperature. Cold forging has good surface quality and high dimensional accuracy, which can replace some mechanical processing. Cold forging can increase metal strength, increase flange strength and reduce production costs.
